About Us

Our Story

Bourgeois Fishing Charters was started in 1993 by my parents- Theophile and Melissa Bourgeois with a dream and a mission: To build the greatest fishing lodge in Southeast Louisiana and share their passion for the Cajun way of life with the world. What started as a childhood dream was made manifest by two people with a co-signed bank loan, one boat, a leased Suburban, and a prayer. My father’s childhood was spent on the Bayous of Barataria, Louisiana. His young heart beat in perpetual rhythm to the pulse of the bayou. His adolescence was set to the endearing charm of the Southeast Louisiana Marshes-Namely, the Barataria Bay Estuary System, the same labyrinth of fabled bayous, swamps, bays, and marshes once traversed and still haunted by notorious Pirate turned Privateer and namesake of our town-Jean Lafitte. He would spend his childhood learning the ways of the land from his father, my Paw Paw Theophile Jean-Antoine Bourgeois Jr. It was Theophile Jr, my paw paw, who’s houseboat donned the name “Theophile’s Dream” and would be the floating paradise of my father’s childhood that would foster the passion for, and plant the seed of what would someday germinate into a crazy idea to turn an abandoned historic schoolhouse into the 10 bedroom, 10,000 sq. ft world class fishing destination known the world over, equipped with a fleet of eight vessels, a staff of 20 plus dedicated team members-touting an unrivaled immersion into the Cajun way of life; The Cajun Vista Lodge at Bourgeois Fishing Charters. In 2001 my family purchased the building that was once the Barataria Elementary School and began the arduous process of turning this behemoth of a structure into a world class fishing lodge. After many years and various stages of construction, the old bones of the Barataria Elementary School were turned into the Cajun Vista Fishing Lodge and Retreat Center-slowly and surely through persistence and perseverance.

My father- Capt. Theophile Bourgeois III made it his life’s work to forge this Lodge into a Louisiana Legacy and for many years he was the face of Louisiana fishing. Tragically, he passed away in 2019 and suddenly I found myself at the helm of the ship of my father’s creation. The following months were filled with uncertainty but one thing was certain, I and my family would keep this ship sailing so my father’s legacy would not be in vain. The months that followed brought a world pandemic that shut down our entire operation for nearly a year. This would be yet another in a list of many tests of our fortitude. Over the years because of our vulnerable position directly on Bayou Barataria just 30 miles North of the Gulf of Mexico and outside of levee protection we have seen significant storm damage from hurricanes. In all, since 2001-The lodge has been flooded 5 times from various storms and with each flood we do what Cajuns do-we persevere. Just as Covid lockdowns were easing, in the fall of 2020 a direct hit from hurricane Laura destroyed our entire back porches and rear section of the lodge clearing much of our 2020 fall season. Then there was the big one-Hurricane Ida in 2021-which inundated the entire first story of the lodge with 6 ft of floodwaters and marsh mud- decimating any chance for normal business operations for the foreseeable future but still we carried on. If all of that wasn’t enough, just three months after the worst storm damage of our communities history- in a bit of a blessing and a curse we started the over year and a half engineering feat of elevating our 10,000 sq. Ft lodge 9 ft in the air to base flood elevation. With my family by my side and the help of an outstanding team we have built back better than ever and are thrilled to continue to carry on what was once my father’s and is now our family’s love song to Southeast Louisiana!
